Houston, we have a problem. Over the last year a family member has developed allergic asthma; testing has revealed high reactivity to timothy grass, orchard grass, sweet vernal grass, and bermuda grass (ALL the grasses tested for). How have other folks navigated this?

This is old but may help too.

And give a go to "allergic" searching the Cavy Chat forum. You may find some useful topics.

A hepa filter perhaps?

Oat hay? Not rereading this to see if it is helpful or not but may help.

Hello! Timothy hay allergy isn't always a deal breaker. My husband breaks out in a rash and gets wheezy around Timothy Hay. We address it by keeping a large Honeywell HEPA air cleaner running 24/7 in the same room as the cage. I turn it to the Turbo setting when I add hay to my pig's cage but leave it on Medium the rest of the time. We also started storing the large bags of hay outdoors in an Action Packer type sealed bin and decant hay into smaller sealed dog food containers for indoors. I also change the timothy hay/litter box outside so as to not distribute the massive amounts of hay dust around the house. We have had very good luck with Oat hay. It's been a couple of months since you posted, so I am interested in hearing how the oat has worked out for you.
