Hi, we sadly lost a piggy to a URI earlier this week and now two of our other piggies are showing early symptoms (clogged nose, lots of sneezing). We went to the vet and got antobiotics while the uri is still in its early stages so we can be sure to heal them properly. The vet told us to monitor their weight but I forgot to ask what type of weight loss should worry me.

One is a two year old pig that weighs 804 grams and the other a two months old that weighs 322 grams.

I suppose I should see a little increase in weight for our youngest and stability for the oldest, but I'm not sure at which point I should get worried and step in with critical care and how much critical care should be given. I tried and it seems impossible to call the vet only to get information right now, so I'm turning to you for help!

For now they're always nibbling on their hay and get excited when it's time for vegetables, so they still have appetite but it would be hard to say if they're eating less hay.

Thanks for your help!

This page might help:

If truly ill, it is not as likely your younger one would gain any weight. More likely to maintain weight. Be sure to watch out for inappetence while on antibiotics.

Do you have any Critical Care on hand in case they start having appetite issues? I think some people have posted that it's on backorder and hard to get. Just to be prepared, it might be a good idea because antibiotics can mess with their appetite and they have to keep eating. Best of luck and I hope they start showing signs of improvement.
