Most Seattle-area veterinary offices seem to refer their patients to a different emergency hospital in town, but in my experience this is a better hospital, since they have knowledgable staff who specialize in exotics — including guinea pigs. Dr. Strunk, the medical director, came strongly recommended through the local cavy community.

Animal Health Services is an AAHA accredited clinic that takes Care Credit. Their exotics veterinarian (and owner) is Doctor Nancy Kuehlwein, who has personal experience keeping rescued cavies. Our cavies have seen her for nail trims, exams, and diagnostic x rays. She was knowledgeable, cavy savvy and understanding. She diagnosed one of our elderly rescues (Magellan) with bumblefoot and arthritis, and does follow up calls to see how your pet is doing. This clinic also gives 501(c)3 non profit rescues a 15% discount on veterinary services. The staff we've met there have all been compassionate and friendly. They have been kind enough to let us fill pet prescriptions at human pharmacies to get them cheaper when our budget has been stressed.

This VCA Animal Hospital has two exotics veterinarians who see cavies and are cavy savvy (one exotics veterinarian there does not see cavies as she is allergic), and they take Care Credit. We have had three exams done with doctor Russell Moore who was cavy savvy, and told us about the need for larger than pet store sized cages and making your own cage. We have had numerous exams, x rays, emergency care, and a culture done with doctor Karen Vallee, another one of their cavy savvy exotics veterinarians, she was very sympathetic and kind when we lost our two elderly cavies despite her working hard with us to save them. They do follow up calls to see how your pet is doing and the whole staff is extremely friendly and compassionate.

Dr. Mitchell came highly recommended to me through the local cavy community. While this hospital is too far for us to call her our regular vet, we did see her during an emergency when our usual vet wasn’t in, and found her manner great — kind, thorough, careful, and wise.

Dr. Nathanson came highly recommended to me through the local cavy community. She has a wonderful manner — with the pigs as much as the people — very caring, thorough, and confident. We have had two scares with two of our piggies, and Dr. Nathanson has kept our “babies” alive for us. She is also great with my children who join our vet visits, letting them look at x-rays, listen to our pigs’ heart beats, etc. — and was even gracious enough to let my kids’ school group, “Future Vets," come in to learn about treating animals and showing us the equipment and tools.

Doctor Lianne Sperlich is an exotics specialist and has a lot of experience with guinea pig and rabbit surgeries, especially spay/neuter surgeries. We took Alistair to her to have him neutered and he was well cared for while there, they also sold critical care and had it right in plain view of the public, sent us home with pain medication and was given an antibiotic (I requested an antibiotic to prevent an infection post-neuter). She does the neuter and spay surgeries for cavies that need it for medical reasons for Foggy Creek Cavy Rescue. She was very approachable and friendly and really seemed to love cavies.

South Puget Sound area exotics vet. Sees reptiles as well as warm and fuzzies and is recommended by the Rabbit Haven shelter as well as local pet stores. I've used them for wellness checks but have not had to yet for serious issues. Rabbit Haven also recommends a few other vets on their site: http://rabbithaven.org/vets-emergencies
